Adaptive Skills Training (AST)

What is AST?

Adaptive Skills Training (AST) are sometimes referred to as life skills, independent living skills or daily living skills. Our AST program emphasizes functional daily living and social skills for school age individuals and young adults. Our goal is to provide basic life skills which includes, but are not limited to:  self-care activities, cooking, money management, shopping, room organization, transportation, community use, home or school living. These skills are learned over time, beginning at home at a very young age and developed further throughout adolescence and adulthood.  Our AST program emphasizes the necessity of  becoming an active member of the family and the community.

Learning a wide range of life skills that apply to many areas of life is critical. Our goal is to also include executive functional skills or thinking skills such as organizing, planning, prioritizing and decision making related to each life skill being taught.  We use evidence based intervention strategies that enhance the individual’s ability to survive and thrive in their local community.
